Christmass tree Food security was chosen as one of the main focus areas of the Trust, with the objective to improve food security by providing learners access to nutritional diet through the development of vegetable gardens at schools, and to expose ordinary community members, especially women and children (learners) to agriculture.

The Project’s plans were made for the garden after identifying the outlay and location for the garden of at least a hectare. The soil quality for the planting of vegetables were tested and water availability established. These key elements appeared to be all in place and conducive for the project and hence implementation was planned for early 2023. Unfortunately, the provincial Departments of Transport and Education decided to communicate plans to suspend transport for pupils to these school and this part of the Project had to be suspended. The sustainability of these schools is therefore at stake and may even lead to children not being able to attend school at all.

The remaining part of the Project, the Morabaraba game launch and tournaments for the schools, was continued with and was successfully launched on Wednesday 26 April 2023. So, besides the “bad “news it was still possible to create a very happy and wonderful event for these pupils. “We were really touched by how hungry these children were when they crowded around us while we handed out some food. It was reassuring to see that we made a difference to these children’s lives by enjoying the Morabaraba game as well as the food,” said Elmarie Joynt, Group Legal Counsel and Group Company Secretary at Senwes.
